Students taught about the need for OHSAS 18001 training, Mar 05, 2010 00:00:00
Healthcare students from Northumbria University have been shown why carrying out regular OHSAS 18001 training is important.

On March 3rd, a team from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) visited the university to demonstrate what hazards are typically present on a hospital ward and how to minimise the risks to both staff members and patients.

Run in conjunction with the HSE's Shattered Lives campaign, the event was designed to draw particular attention to injuries caused by slips, trips and falls.

The organisation revealed that in 2008/09, there were almost 4,500 slips and trips in the healthcare industry, with more than 1,500 of these incidents resulting in a major injury.

Overall in Britain, 36 per cent of all major injuries sustained in the workplace are caused by slips and trips, while more than 4,500 people were hurt in falls from height.

David Cole, principal inspector for the HSE in the north-east, said that he is pleased that Northumbria University is drawing attention to the problem among its students.

He commented: "Unfortunately, people often think that slips, trips and falls are trivial, even comical but they are no joke to those who suffer major injuries, time off work and a lifetime of disability."
